Metallic wax highlights raised details and brings depth to a textured mixed media project. A dark base and a restrained colour palette help the embossed and moulded elements stand out.
Gather your supplies
- A sturdy wooden, chipboard or canvas base
- Black gesso, texture paste and a stencil
- Prepared moulded embellishments or other decorative pieces
- A suitable strong adhesive or gel medium
- Metallic wax and an application brush
Build the texture
Prime the base with black gesso and allow it to dry. Apply texture paste through a stencil, lift the stencil carefully and let the pattern dry fully.
Arrange your embellishments before gluing them down. Leave some open space so each detail has room to stand out. Use an adhesive suited to the weight and surface of the pieces, then coat the attached elements with gesso if you want a unified dark background.
Highlight the raised details
Apply a small amount of metallic wax to a brush and lightly pass it over the raised texture. Build the colour gradually, keeping recessed areas darker. Follow the wax manufacturer’s directions for application and any final sealant; not every wax needs or accepts the same finish.
If you make resin embellishments for the project, prepare and fully cure them separately according to the resin instructions before assembly.
