Melt-and-pour soap offers a straightforward introduction to making decorative soap bars. Start with a ready-made base and ingredients intended for cosmetic use.
Choose a soap base
Clear, opaque and other prepared bases have different appearances and ingredient lists. Read the current product information and choose one that suits your design and intended user.
Use suitable colourants
Choose colourants specifically approved for soap and follow their recommended amounts. Craft paint, general glitter and resin pigments are not automatically suitable for skin-contact products.
Pick a mould
A soap-compatible mould can create a simple bar, flower or other shape. Check the material and clean it before use. Reserve soap-making equipment for its intended purpose.
Add fragrance carefully
Use a fragrance or essential oil intended for the chosen soap base at the supplier’s recommended level. More fragrance is not always better, and suitability varies by ingredient and intended use.
Finish and label
Melt and pour according to the base instructions, then allow the bars to cool fully. Keep a note of the ingredients and share relevant allergy information when giving the soap as a gift. Start with a simple design before experimenting with layers and textures.
