Handmade candles and soaps can make thoughtful gifts, but each uses a different base and process. Choose one project to begin with and gather materials designed specifically for it.
For candle making
Prepare candle wax, a compatible wick, a suitable mould or candle-safe container, and any candle colourant or fragrance recommended for that wax. Use the supplier’s guidance to match the wick to the container and wax.
Melt, mix and pour according to the product instructions, including temperatures and fragrance loading. Let the candle set and cure as directed. Keep flammable decorative materials away from the flame and test a new candle design before gifting it.
For melt-and-pour soap
Start with a ready-made melt-and-pour soap base, a soap mould and suitable cosmetic-grade colourants or fragrances. Melt the base gently, add approved ingredients at their recommended levels and pour into the mould.
Allow the soap to cool fully before removing it. Keep tools clean and label ingredients when giving handmade soap to someone who may have allergies.
Keep the processes separate
Soap base is not candle wax. Candle fragrance is not automatically suitable for skin, and household glitter or craft paint does not belong in soap. Check each ingredient’s intended use.
Begin with a simple shape and one colour or scent. Once familiar with the materials, experiment with layers, colours and presentation.
