Decoupage transforms a plain surface with layers of decorative paper and a suitable adhesive medium. A small wooden tray, plaque or box is a manageable place to begin.
Your starter supplies
- A clean, suitable craft surface
- Acrylic paint and a brush
- Decoupage paper, rice paper or another compatible decorative paper
- Decoupage medium and a soft brush
- Scissors and any recommended protective finish
Prepare the surface
Clean the base and remove loose dust. If needed, apply a compatible primer or acrylic base coat and allow it to dry. A light background often helps delicate paper designs remain visible.
Plan and apply your design
Cut or carefully tear the paper shapes, then arrange them without adhesive until you are happy with the layout. Apply the medium according to its instructions, lay down the paper and gently smooth it from the centre outwards.
Work in small sections and avoid repeatedly rubbing delicate, wet paper. Let each layer dry as directed before adding another.
Finish with care
Seal the decorated surface using the medium or a compatible finish recommended for your project. Drying and curing times vary by product. A decorative finish does not automatically make an object waterproof, dishwasher-safe or suitable for food contact.
Once comfortable with a small project, try coordinated picture frames or an upcycled decorative bottle. Choose a few papers in a shared colour palette for a balanced result.
